ADOPTIC EXPLAINER

Designing research for impact from the start

This short explainer video explains why impact is preceded by adoption, and how understanding the conditions that support adoption can help researchers design stronger pathways for translation, funding, collaboration, commercialisation, policy influence, service improvement, or community benefit.

Most researchers are motivated to see their work create a positive impact beyond academia. Robust research results are an essential foundation. But to see these research results create positive differences in environments outside of academia, these outputs need to be translated into something that people can use, apply, adopt or implement.

The Research Translation to Impact framework gives researchers a practical, evidence-informed way to think through how that transition can happen.

Grounded in innovation science, the Research Translation to Impact framework draws on known factors that influence whether research and innovation are adopted in practice.

A clearer way to design for adoption and impact

The Research Translation to Impact framework helps researchers take a more systematic approach to increasing the impact potential of their work.

Rather than leaving adoption to chance, Research Translation to Impact framework helps you explore the known factors that influence whether research is likely to be used, applied, implemented, funded, or supported.

It can help you clarify:

  • Who could benefit from this research?

  • What could this research enable?

  • What form could the research take beyond academic outputs?

  • What evidence would strengthen a case for funding, partnership, translation, or further development?

  • What conditions would make uptake, use, or adoption more likely?

Because the framework is grounded in innovation science, it focuses on the factors that shape whether research is likely to be used, applied, implemented, funded, or supported.

This can help researchers develop clearer impact logic, strengthen grant and funding narratives, prepare for partner conversations, and identify practical next steps for translation.

Use the Research Translation to Impact framework to ask better impact questions earlier, so your research has a clearer pathway towards use, uptake, and change.
